Anglepoise is a British lighting company that is known for its iconic task lamps. The company was founded in 1932 by George Carwardine, an automotive engineer who was interested in finding a way to create a lamp that could be easily adjusted and held its position without slipping or toppling over.
Carwardine’s solution was to use a unique system of springs and levers that allowed the lamp to be positioned and balanced in any direction. He patented the design in 1933, and the Anglepoise lamp was born.
The first Anglepoise lamp was called the Model 1208, and it was an instant success. The lamp’s unique design and functionality quickly caught the attention of architects, engineers, and designers, and it soon became a fixture in offices, workshops, and homes around the world.
During World War II, Anglepoise lamps were used extensively in military and industrial settings, and the company was awarded the prestigious Queen’s Award for innovation in 1969.
Over the years, Anglepoise has continued to innovate and expand its product line, introducing new models and variations on the classic design. Today, the company is still based in the UK and remains committed to creating high-quality, functional lighting solutions that are both stylish and practical.
