Habitat Black Leather Wassily Chair / B3 Chair Designed By Marcel Breuer

Description

Tubular chrome and black leather Wassily Chair / B3 Chair designed by Marcel Breuer and produced by Habitat and included in the 1986 Habitat catalogue.

Designed by Marcel Breuer in 1925–1926, the Wassily Chair stands as a timeless icon of modernist design. During the 1980s, the British retailer Habitat introduced their own adaptation of this classic, referred to as the “Medici chair.” This edition featured a sleek chrome tubular frame paired with stitched black leather for the seat, back, and armrests, offering a contemporary take on Breuer’s visionary creation.

The Habitat interpretation stayed true to the hallmark features of Breuer’s original design, showcasing tubular steel influenced by bicycle construction and embracing the clean, minimalist lines synonymous with the Bauhaus ethos. Unlike the original Wassily Chair, which featured Eisengarn fabric straps—an innovative waxed-cotton material – Habitat’s version introduced leather elements, creating a fresh and tactile twist on the iconic classic.

In fantastic vintage condition.  No scratches or rips to leather.  Very tiny scuff to the end one of the arms which can be seen in the photos.

Very desirable furniture to add a distinct mid century modern aesthetic to your home.

Habitat

HabitatHabitat, founded in 1964 by Sir Terence Conran, revolutionised the way Britons approached home furnishings and interior design. Emerging during a period of cultural transformation in the UK, Habitat captured the spirit of the Swinging Sixties by introducing modern, functional, and affordable furniture that catered to a burgeoning younger demographic eager to break away from traditional styles.Conran’s vision was to combine practicality with clean, contemporary design, drawing inspiration from European aesthetics, particularly Scandinavian minimalism. Habitat became synonymous with innovative pieces like the iconic Chicken Brick and flat-pack furniture, which were not only stylish but also accessible to a wide audience. Its stores were designed to inspire, with displays that mimicked real living spaces, a novel concept at the time.By the 1970s and 80s, Habitat expanded internationally, introducing British consumers to global influences, from Japanese ceramics to French cookware. The brand was instrumental in democratizing design, making what was once considered high-end and exclusive available to the everyday consumer.Though the brand faced challenges and ownership changes over the decades, Habitat’s legacy endures as a pioneer of modern living in Britain. Today, it continues to blend timeless design principles with contemporary trends, holding its place as a beloved institution in British furniture history.Made in the UK
