Ladderax Modular Bedroom / Wardrobe Unit by Staples – 2 Bays

£1,495.00

Description

This rare and scarcely seen mid century Ladderax modular bedroom unit features a wardrobe with pull out hanging rail, tie bar and five interior shelves providing lots of useful storage. There’s a three drawer lockable chest of drawers, three shelves, ten support rods and 4 anti-tip hooks to secure the individual units to the support ladders.

The ladder-like supports are made of steel, which serve as the backbone of the unit.  These ladders have rungs spaced at regular intervals, allowing for the shelves and units to be positioned at different levels based on individual needs and preferences.

The Ladderax system can be easily adapted and expanded as storage needs evolve over time. Users have the flexibility to add or remove components, adjust shelf heights, and create a personalised layout that suits their specific requirements.

Complete Ladderax unit consists of

1 x Double teak wardrobe
1 x Three drawer unit
3 x Standard shelves
3 x Black metal support ladders
10 x Metal hook support rods
4 x Anti-tip hooks
2 x keys

Ladderax is a renowned modular shelving system that offers functional storage, versatility, and a distinct mid-century modern aesthetic.

Brand

Staples

Staples & Co. Ltd., commonly known as Staples, was a British furniture company founded in 1895. Initially, they were known for producing high-quality mattresses and upholstery, but they later diversified into other types of furniture, including the modular shelving system for which they are most famous: Ladderax.

Ladderax Shelving System

  • Designed by: Robert Heal in 1964.
  • Production: Manufactured by Staples & Co. until the 1980s.
Key Features:
  • A modular, self-assembly system that combined function and style.
  • Constructed with teak veneered cabinets, drawers, and shelves supported by steel ladders (hence the name).
  • Highly customisable, allowing users to mix and match components to suit their needs.
  • Known for its clean, modernist design in line with the mid-century aesthetic.
  • An affordable alternative to high-end Scandinavian furniture at the time.

Legacy of Staples and Ladderax

Staples’ Ladderax system became an icon of mid-century British design, popular in the 1960s and 70s. The furniture was lightweight, practical, and stylish, making it accessible to a broad audience. Today, Ladderax pieces are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of vintage and mid-century modern design.Despite Ladderax's success, Staples eventually ceased operations in the 1980s, partly due to changing tastes and the rise of flat-pack furniture from companies like IKEA. However, the enduring popularity of Ladderax continues to reflect Staples’ contribution to mid-century design.
