Brand

Pifco

Pifco, short for the Provincial Incandescent Fittings Company, is a British brand known for its production of small electrical appliances and home goods. Founded in 1900 in Manchester, Pifco initially focused on manufacturing lighting products, particularly light fittings and incandescent lamps. Over time, the brand expanded into a variety of household appliances, including heaters, hairdryers, vacuum cleaners, torches, and other small electrical devices.

Key Aspects of Pifco's Legacy:

  1. Mid-Century Popularity: Pifco became a household name in the UK during the mid-20th century. Its products were known for their durability, practicality, and affordability, making them staples in many British homes.
  2. Product Range: While lighting remained a core part of their early business, Pifco diversified into various appliances, such as electric razors, kitchen gadgets, and personal grooming devices. They were particularly recognised for their portable heaters and hairdryers.
  3. Design Aesthetic: Many of Pifco's products from the mid-century period reflect the design trends of the time, featuring clean lines, colorful plastics, and a focus on functionality. This makes vintage Pifco items sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century design.
  4. Decline and Acquisition: Like many traditional British manufacturers, Pifco faced challenges in the late 20th century as global competition increased. The brand eventually became part of Salton Europe, which continued to market products under the Pifco name for a time.
  5. Vintage Appeal: Today, Pifco's vintage appliances are appreciated for their retro aesthetic and serve as nostalgic items for collectors and fans of mid-century design.
